Purses and bags are my favourite accessory. I have more than I probably should, but I always find a way to justify a new one. This year, purse trends for the spring aren’t a complete surprise. Seasonal favourites like florals and pastels are back, textures and black and white add some luxury, while classic shapes continue the retro comeback. Since a handbag is a personal item made for carrying your everyday items, only you can know what works best. But in the meantime, I’ve picked a few of the ones I love for the spring.

1 ASOS

1. This purse exemplifies the top handle trend. A feminine take on the doctor bag, the top handle is big with a structured everyday bag, but we’ve also seen it in smaller versions all over the runway. ASOS Top handle handbag, $120.

2 DEUX LUX

2. For evenings or weekend brunches, the clutch is getting a makeover. The larger, less structured clutch is being favoured over its hard shell-like predecessor. Deux Lux Clutch, $115, available at Nordstrom.

3 FOSSIL

3. Pastels are always a spring staple. This season we’re seeing lots of blush and petal pinks but this green is a nice alternative. Fossil mini bag, $88.

4 MINKOFF

4. I have to admit I was surprised to see the bucket bag make a comeback. It seems so dated to me but once I saw the makeover it got (great hardware, bright colours and lots of detail) I must say I may be coming around. Stella McCartney, $1075, available at Ssense.

5 JUICY

5. Fringe is back. This hippie inspired look is perfect for the coming summer months of music festivals and beach trips. Rebecca Minkoff, $215, available at Nordstrom.

6 MCCARTNEY

6. If you just can’t pick one texture or material, then a mixed media handbag is for you. The combination of leather with studs, or linen and canvas is a great way to add detail and make a statement. Juicy Couture, $160

Christmas may be over, but the snow is still falling and with the dropping temperatures we’re far from ditching our cozy knits. They say that no two snowflakes are alike, and with these wintery pieces, you’ll look just as unique. Bold snowflake prints pair well with muted neutrals and soft fabrics -think dove grey, cream, silk, and cashmere. For a more subtle touch, incorporate this motif in your accessories like this eye-popping sparkling Tiffany charm.

1. Free People snowflake socks, $24, available at Lord and Taylor

2. Tiffany snowflake charm, $165

3. Juicy Couture snowflake sweater dress,  $139

You say you want a style revolution for 2013 so begin the New Year by transporting yourself back in time to a high-spirited era that’s mad for mod. The swinging 60s make their return this year with retro brilliance that’s a bold blast from the past.
Looking through your rose coloured lenses, you’ll gain perspective on the eccentric era that brought notable new style to life. From pop art to futuristic mod to the happy, yet haute hippie, fashion looks back to this revolutionary decade with no shortage of reference points. Start the year off embracing this retro revival by turning back the clock with 60s reminiscent clear-cut patterns, high-contrast colours, blunt silhouettes and wild geometric prints.
To join the mod squad, give a nod to the carefree, youthful vibe emanated by the decade with graphic mod prints, decorative flower power embellishments, swing coats and geometric shifts that’ll easily take you from winter to spring, and back again, with the slip of an opaque pair of black tights to relieve fashionable nostalgia with Twiggy-like proportions.
As you take a psychedelic trip down memory lane, you’ll be left feeling and looking extra groovy in go-go girl glamour as the 60s return with a modern makeover for 2013, proving that eras gone by can still be hip and totally current.
